Red vs. Blue: Zero is the eighteenth full season of Red vs. Blue. The series is co-directed and written by Torrian Crawford, Noël Wiggins, and Joshua Kazemi of Rooster Teeth's Death Battle, from a story by Crawford.
While central character models are still based on the Halo franchise, the season features environments and several characters using weapons and fighting monsters not featured in the Halo games, instead utilizing assets from Unreal Engine's store, including monster designs from the cancelled game Paragon and weapons and character models from Ying Pei Games.
A first glimpse of the season was released in January 2020, showcasing a brief animated fight sequence between two unknown characters. Additional images and clips of other new characters were later promoted afterward midway through the 2020 year. The first episode, Viper, had an early premiere during the RTX@Home First Night livestream on Rooster Teeth's website, with a trailer being posted not long after, on September 15, 2020.
The series was originally set to premiere on October 19, 2020, but was pushed back to November 9, 2020.[10]

Reception
Reception for Red vs. Blue: Zero has been mainly mixed to negative. Critics and fans praised the season for its fight scenes and dynamic camera direction; some even reacted positively to the season's tone of feeling like a Saturday morning cartoon or Fast and Furious movie (as advertised).
However, the season's writing was the source of considerable criticism. The main complaint was that it deviated from the original themes of the series, particularly the absence of the Reds and Blues. The season also drew criticism for only reintroducing original characters Carolina, Washington, and Tucker as side characters who barely interact with the new characters, which could've helped move the plot. In addition, the handling of certain aspects of the lore set up in previous seasons drew criticism as well, such as Wash's cerebral hypoxia and the mechanics of Tucker's sword.[12] [13]
On March 30, 2022, Rooster Teeth announced in an update on the franchise that due to the negative reception, the storyline set up in Zero has been scrapped, and that development had begun on a different storyline.

Trivia
- The opening intro music for this season is "The Mark" by Omega Sparx, making this is the first Red vs. Blue season to be released with a weekly intro credits sequence since the original airings of The Blood Gulch Chronicles.
- This is also the first season since Season 14 to have an outro credits sequence, though 14 would only include them in the final part in multi-episode arcs.
- A brief glimpse of what was thought to be from this season was shown during the January 13, 2020 episode of the RT Podcast, featuring two unknown soldiers in familiar armor battling one another - the full version was later found in the website of the season's director, Torrian Crawford, where it turned out to be a proof of concept for the season, rather than actual footage.
- A second, actual teaser was released on April 6, 2020, alongside other upcoming 2020 Rooster Teeth productions, showcasing Phase and Zero battling against The Guardian.
- A third clip, featuring Agent One in action, was revealed alongside a teaser image on Torrian Crawford's Twitter.[14] [15]
- The internal name for this season was RvB meets Fast & Furious. [16]
- Co-director and writer Noël Wiggins' vision for this season was to make it feel like a Saturday-morning cartoon. [16]
- This is the first Red vs. Blue season not to use Maya for character animation since Season 10, instead using Unreal Engine.
- This is also the first Red vs. Blue season to be delayed from its initial announcement date.
- This is additionally the first Red vs. Blue season to not feature music from longtime series composer Trocadero.
- This is as well the first season of Red vs. Blue not to feature the majority of the title characters in any capacity, with the main exception being Carolina, as well as brief appearances by Tucker and Washington. This was not always the case, according to director Torrian Crawford.[17]
- According to the Family Shatters episode Hard Boiled, the year Zero takes place in is at the very latest 2564, due to April 2564 being the expiration date on the AOD credit card West owns. However, Family Shatters is non-canonical so this year may not be accurate.
- If Zero takes place in the year 2564, then that would mean it takes place six years after the ending of Theogeny.
